Lantana

LantanaThe Town of Lantana is a coastal community in Palm Beach County that retains the charm of its origins as an old Florida fishing village.  Although it is one of the smaller communities of Palm Beach County, it is noted as one of the oldest.  The first settlers came after Congress passed the Armed Occupation Act in 1842 at the end of the Seminole Wars.  Named Lantana Point for the wild Lantana plant which grew in abundance in the area, the 'Point' was eventually dropped.  One of the early businesses was the Lantana Fish Company where one hundred thousand-pound catches of fish were common.  Even today boating and fishing enthusiasts will enjoy drift fishing and fishing from the Lantana drawbridge and seawalls for catching snapper, jacks and bait fish.

Today the town covers 2 square miles and the year-round population is 9,500, with a seasonal population of approximately 13,500.
